Jobs in the community are selected at the Ceremony of Twelve by the Committee of Elders. The Committee watches children from the age of three to twelve and determines their job within that time period.

The Giver
Analysis: The Giver is the current receiver of memory who then passes the memories on to the child that is chosen to be the new Receiver of Memory (Lowry 98). This is a very important job, because this person holds all the memories of the world (Lowry 98). The Giver is part of the group of Elders, a highly appreciated group in the Community, which wears the traditional Elders attire (Lowry 75). The Giver has pale, tired eyes with a wrinkled face, which makes him appear much older than he really is (Lowry 75-76). Although The Giver is very kind and middle- aged, he appears as if he is much older for he is weighed down inside with pain from all the memories he has had to store inside himself to protect the Community from pain and sorrow (Lowry 78). The man has good times and bad times. He has times when the memories make him happy, for instance snow is a happy memory. He also has bad times, like the memory of war (Lowry 78).
Speech: Members of the community I assure you that we still have search crews looking for Jonas. Although he has not been spotted for twenty four hours, we have found his clothes, along with his bike, near the river. Searchers have reason to believe that Jonas fell into the river and drowned. I will advise the searchers to look for one more day. If Jonas and is not found after the time allowed, we as a community will conduct a Ceremony of the Lost, and I will remain the Receiver of Memory until another person is selected.
I don't feel that The Giver would tell the Community about the releasing of his memories, now that Jonas has left; because that might reveal the plan with Jonas.
